City Fights Back After Disasters!

in smartcity •  7 years ago  (edited)

The city of Higashimatsushima, is probably one of the world's safest cities. Located in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, the city has a population of around 40,000 persons.

This tiny city was almost destroyed by not one but two massive earthquakes and a totally destructive tsunami about 14 years ago. But since then the government of Higashimatsushima has spent millions on special technology and building methods to minimise any of the disasters, nature might throw at them again.

In these disasters, homes were lost, lives and businesses.....changing the lives of the residents forever.

Higashimatsushima has made sure it would not be repeated.

A special 20-foot seawall has been constructed and is specially designed to absorb a tsunami on its way into the town for the first time.

Another wall was built further inland, with special diversion canals to feed the water back out to sea, so it now protected by a seawall and a floodgate.

The city installed solar-powered surveillance cameras along the seaside. These cameras allow meteorologists to see incoming tsunamis and guide residents to high ground, based on incoming water levels.

I could not find a picture of the wall but it would look something like this one in Fudai.
