I will be going to Finland! What should I do? I need to eat RICE!

Hi Steemians!

Header_lapland_konsta_aurora_hannes.jpg

So in about 2 months time I will be heading to Finland and will be there for another 4 months.

I am excited but yet I am quite worried.

I am excited about the cold weather, maybe able to see snow (I have never seen snow my entire life because I just don't have luck with that), and having seen so many amazing photos of the Northern Lights, the scenery there, I hope it will be as breathtaking in real life.

But I am worried about a few things. You guys might laugh at this, but it's a real concern for me!

I am worried I can't find rice to eat!
And of course the cost of living there is very daunting for me.

Since young I have been labelled by family and friend as '饭桶' and literally it means 'Rice Bucket'. I can't live without eating rice (might be an exaggeration). I did some research and found that I can indeed buy rice in Finland, but I'm not sure how expensive it is and whether cafes/restaurants do serve them, other than the Asian food outlets probably.

So I would like to reach out to Steemians who are from Finland, or have been to Finland before for help on this issue. How much does rice cost there? Do people in Finland like eating rice?

But in the very very worst case scenario, I believe there should be potatoes. I like potatoes very much as well, so I probably can eat 4 months * 3 meals/day of potatoes hahaha.

With the euro being quite high now, the cost of living there might also be quite tough on me. Because I will be residing there for 4 months, I had to apply for a Finland Residence permit in Singapore. And guess how much it cost!
300 Euros! That's almost 500 Singapore dollars! So I am expecting things to also be quite expensive there.

So all in all, my concerns seem to just be about $$ and some food issues afterall.

What are some foods, fruits or things you guys recommend me to try when I am there? Or places that are a Must Go for me? Please do let me know what you Steemians think! :D I will of course post updates when I am there (2 months later!)

Enjoy Buddy

Thanks bro!

Wow how exciting! I can definitely relate to needing a certain food while travelling, whether it's out of comfort or pure necessity (i love your nickname too, Rice Bucket LOL!).
Rice seems so common in the countries I have visited, so I hope that Finland is the same. If not, would you be able to purchase some online? I do that quite a bit on Amazon or sometimes eBay if I cannot find certain foods in stores.

I hope you have the best time and look forward to seeing your trip in Finland if you share pics here!

HAHAHA do you visit many asian countries? there are some differences in the rice around these areas though, like in Singapore we have a mixed of long and short grain rice. In Japan its normally the rounder and stickier kind and so on hahaha. KFC in singapore serves this thing called Chicken Rice Bucket HAHA.
I'm still unsure if the part of Finland i'm heading to has Amazon service hmmm

I've visited Japan, and I ate lots of rice too! More so than Ramen which was probably a close second. I'm currently in Mexico and they are certainly not shy on rice - and it's affordable! It's also a mix of long and short rice too.
I'm sure your rice in Finland will be a successful endevour! Would be great if they had a little international section in their grocery shops

HAHAHA I will definitely source out all my grocery items on the first few days im there. My favourite hangout spot is the supermart. Will definitely post updates on this! But that'll only be 2 months later!
I haven't been to any part near the Americas before, maybe someday far away hahaha

HI. Iam from Finland and i can sure you that you can get rice everywhere here. So any grocery store and pretty much any restaurant. Cant say how much normal rice will cost i a grocery store but I promise to check when i visit one next time (should be whiting a day or two).

hi CryptodomFinland!! Thanks so much!! :D I will be mainly heading to Mikkeli!

Seeing northern lights in Mikkeli might be a bit difficult. Its not north enough.

yess i think i will be heading up north to Lapland. would that have more possibility of viewing the lights in march/april?

yes, definitely, especially march

I am from Finland and I can tell you that you will find rice from every retailer store. It is not the most typical dish in restaurants but like you said you will get it from Asian restaurants.

And yes, everything here is expensive except internet

omgosh really thats very good to hear!! its good news for my stomach :P
but damn... yea i have to prepare myself for the costs. what do you recommend for internet/mobile sim and data for 4 months @dromzz ?

You can get unlimited 4g for 20-30€ from almost every operator. you can use Elisa or Moi for example.

Thanks so much @dromzz ! If i have any more questions I will hit you up with em if you dont mind :D

Sure! I can help you

rice is good for eat

Yes! I really love rice, do you eat alot of it as well?
