You don't need to find something phenomenal to photograph all the time.

Most days, I go for a walk around the block. Sometimes I go in one direction, other days, I go another. In the park near my house, there's a number of trees. I've passed these trees for almost a year, never taking notice, however, this morning, in the early morning light, one particular tree jumped out at me as being particularly pleasing.

When you stop to look at the image (unfiltered other than a slight crop) - it almost looks like it is cell shaded. The blue chromatic abberation sneaking in from the right is a result of shooting with the sun being on the other side of the tree and light bleeding in and around.

This image is a classic case of stopping, looking at the things near you, and avoiding the cultural cringe of needing to go to far flung, foreign places to capture something through a lens, that is at the very least, mildly visually interesting.

I've said a few times throughout recent rambling blogs and comments that I want to start doing photography again on a regular basis - but its not the 'popular' sort of photography, my work tends to focus on the un-noticed, ephemeral things.

I do love taking portraits, however; and pushing my own intepretation on the poses and subjects.

Great photo. This is the problem with today, we have so much potential right in our pockets. I understand that there will always be a need for non-smartphone camera's however they are getting bloody good.

I know for example, that if I were travelling, let's say to Europe. I would much prefer to take my phone with me rather than lug around a DSLR. I say this because with a DSLR I cannot point my camera at something, press a button and get a photo that is looking pretty darn snazzy. I will want to shoot St Peter's Cathedral which will be flooded with people and I will spend much of my time waiting to get a shot where the lighting is perfect and there isn't a sole in sight.

If I am on a holiday I am wanting to do as much as I can which is what the amazing device in my pocket allows me to do. Get in, get a memory and go. Of course every situation is different, if was going somewhere where I knew I had time to mess around with my camera and spend a while making sure every setting and scene were exactly as I wanted them, I would choose a DSLR.

Maybe I am just proving your point, here I am talking about taking a lifetime to capture a beautiful photo when perhaps beauty is all around us, maybe I just need to slow down and look a bit harder.

Great post, thanks for sharing.

Agreed. I haven't taken my SLR out in such a long time. When I do, though, there's a certain sense of magic felt by that weighty magnesium shell that imprisons light to make us remember things more fondly.

keep sharing, more power!

Thank you, I plan to do so! :)

There is always beauty in the mundane!

One thing I can’t stand is when people are witnessing first hand a monumental event... and they choose to watch through their smartphones. Sometimes the power is misused. But you nailed it.

Good posting, I like that.
