What is photography?
Photography is the science, art, application and practice of creating durable images by recording light or other electromagnetic radiation, either electronically by means of an image sensor, or chemically by means of a light-sensitive material such as photographic film.
Wikipedia, 2018
Wikipedia's definition makes photography sound so serious and complex. I mean we don't exactly see all these processes mentioned in the definition above. All that mumble jumble classifies photography as a thing of science. Is photography really science?? In some sense it is, but I'll prefer to tag photography as an art.
Photography is Art because it requires a creative mind and creativity stems from art so in other words Photography is creative art.
Memories are invaluable assets to us as humans, especially the good ones. Preserving these memories I think spurred the creation of the world's first camera. Taking photographs far back in the early 80s and 90s was only for special events but with the advancement in technology it has become part of everyday life, we take photos while we work. have a party, celebrate a birthday, even while we eat and sleep. Photography has become a common thing with the invention of smartphones with cameras and daily this technology is advancing.
However even with camera phones being a common commodity which everyone can handle, creativity is a much needed ingredient in photography that's why photographers are still sold out. Not everyone has the creativity to churn out amazing photos and this gave rise to the term " Professional Photographer".
There are several factors to be considered in making a photograph really amazing and this is where the science part comes in. These factors include;
- ISO
- Shutter Speed
- Aperture
- Temperature
- White Balance
- Exposure
- Focus
While these terms may sound strange to some people, these are common terms to photographers. These settings are not readily available on every smartphone and this makes smartphone photography quite difficult and tasking.
I have loved photography for as long as I can remember, but I became actively involved in it last year. Fresh off college with no job opportunity in sight, I had to become useful to myself. I was inspired by photos captured by @xpressng and @anyadan and It was then I decidedI was going to be a photographer. I forsake all my knowledge of Physics which I studied in college.( In Nigeria Physics will take you nowhere without connection).
Smartphone photography became a huge part of my life. Everywhere I went I was on a look out for something extra most times objects. In no time at all I had learned the basics and have improved greatly since then thanks to my good friend @anyadan.
Thanks for reading. Now to wow you with some photos I've captured with my smartphone( Tecno Camon CM & HTC M7)
PS: Both phones are really low-end phones not costing up more than $150
All the pictures prior to this one below were recreated from this.
This is a picture of my colleague at the studio where I work and while we had nothing to do, I decided to be spontaneous and it paid off.
The picture was captured with my smartphone and was edited on same smartphone with the help of two amazing apps (Snapseed and Picsarts) that it a must have for anyone trying out smarphone photography. Both apps are available on both Android and ios platforms.
Now onto older pictures you may or may not have seen.
<hr.
Pheww!! If you had scrolled down to this part it means you've been thrilled by my work. For that I'm really appreciative.
Here are some other photos this time of me.
Me and my colleague
.
There's a huge contrast between Smartphone photography and actual Digital photography in terms of clarity and detailing but I've been won over by smartphone photography because it stirs up creativity all the time. Without the right tools and functions on a smartphone it would seem difficult to create an interesting image, but it's not. All photography(Smartphone or Digital) needs is a creative mind.
PHOTOGRAPHY IS ART
Photographers are not scientists but we paint pictures on graphs.
