Places I Feel At Home Pt. 1 - The Masonic, Detroit, MI

in smartphonephotography •  7 years ago  (edited)

There are a handful of places I enjoy being above most others. One of them is The Masonic in Detroit, Mi. It is the largest Masonic Temple in the world. Construction of the Temple started in 1920 and it opened in 1926. Sadly, shortly after the country was subject to the Great Depression. Most the the building was finished. There are only a few areas that to this day are left incomplete, such as the indoor swimming pool and the third theater which is on the top floor. The building houses thousands of rooms including seven craft lodge "blue" rooms, two complete theaters, two ball rooms, and many more.

But, enough of that history stuff. Lets get to some of the pictures.

The outside of this building is beautiful and covered in symbolism relating to Freemasonry. They, sadly, don't build buildings like this anymore. Architecture just does not compare these days. It is not just the outside of the building that has beautiful detail, the inside is also filled with thousands of examples of beautifully hand crafted decorations and features.

The building also features extravagant meeting spaces for weddings, conferences, and other social events.

And as I mentioned two impressive theaters. This is the main theater that is often used for concerts to this day.

These are just a few samples of the beauty that this building holds. If you are in the Detroit area there are often public tours available. You can get more information, and see some better quality pictures, at their website found here. http://www.themasonic.com/

One last bonus picture. This is from within the unfinished theater on the top floor. This is one of my favorite pictures, though the quality is not that great.

I hope you enjoyed these pictures. They were taken with a smart phone, so quality was not the greatest. I have more that I'll post on another day.

Oooh...I've walked past that building before, and I've always wanted to see the inside of it. Thanks for this post!
