Kumquat - So Delicious!!

Imgur

It is still sunny and warm in Southern California and I was working on this Urban Homestead most of today.
We are hoping for rain (not in the forecast, but one can hope, right?). We dug a ditch all through the garden to catch as much rain as possible. today, we did some maintenance on that, watering and planting.

Finding some ripe Kumquats was such a nice surprise and the best afternoon snack!

Did you know that the flesh of the Kumquats is sour and the skin is sweet? You eat the whole thing!!

So good!! And you can even see my lipstick color 😀

Another beautiful fact about this tree is that it produces over many months. So different from stonefruits such as peaches and apricots. Usually, two to three weeks and the harvest is over.

As you can see, I am eating some and new ones are still growing. Kumquats for months to come!!

I have four of these little beauties on the homestead! The fruit makes wonderful marmalade, and fruit juices. We have even made a kumquat upside down cake! That is when the guys aren't eating them right of the trees.

I have two and gave my son one. They are so good!!

We also like to slice them and put them in a clear container with water for parties. Looks so good and it tastes well.

Yum! I love kumquats but don't have them often. It's raining here in North Carolina. Praying that you guys get rain soon.

Thanks for sharing. All the best.

Thank you! We really need it! I get to know more and more people from North Carolina :)

Thanks for the prayers, between parched land and wild fires, SoCal could use a serious drenching!

first time i heard this fruit and its very interesting that you can eat the whole fruit :)

When people first told me that, I didn't really believe it.

I have never had a kumquat. They look like baby oranges.

They do look like baby oranges - all citrus :)

These look delicious! And I love how much fun it is to say their name, always illicit a giggle.

One of the things I miss about living in Southern California are the kumquats. My whole life, all I knew of them was from the blind man in It's a Gift (WC Fields) yelling, "I want my kumquats!" Then one day my daughter brought me bagful from her friend's tree. It was a bit of a revelation! I once candied them to put on a chocolate cake and also made marmalade full of tiny slices of 'em. So delicious.

Here's the link:

Ha, I didn't know about the blind man :)
Where do you live now?

I'm North of San Francisco, about 30 miles, in Vallejo. I lived in Simi Valley for awhile as that's where my Ex grew up. Vallejo has a reputation, but it's actually quite awesome. It felt like home right away, even though I had preconceived notions about it. I lived in Napa when I was a kid, and came back up to be closer to my dad and siblings.

Yay for the kumquats! They are so easy to eat. I can't grow them here in Oregon's Willamette Valley. But I have harvested them off the University of Arizona campus in Tucson. Brandied kumquats are so good on top of yogurt or ice cream! :D

Ha!! That sounds good! But I like them off the tree in my mouth the best of all :)

With trees nearby, right off the tree is the best, for sure! :D
