Smartphone Photography - The Beautiful Light at Kinderdijk, Netherlands

As soon as I saw the theme of light for this week's #smartphonephotography, I knew I had a photo I've wanted to share for some time.

IMG_1690.jpg

The windmills at Kinderdijk are an incredible testament to man's ingenuity. These famous windmills (now a UNESCO World Heritage Site) were built in the 18th Century (1738-40) to solve the problem of water in the fields by pumping the water up and into a reservoir. True science and ingenuity proved a successful solution. A few years ago I had a chance to tour these historic windmills and look inside them. It's no surprise how the masters used settings like this with the incredible natural light to make beautiful paintings that hang in museums today. Taken on an iPhone 5c.

Awesome! I was looking forward to seeing yours! I love the yellow tones on the right and the staircase, the composition is spot on!

Thanks! This really is one of those perfect locations where you just point the camera and shoot. The hard work was done 300 years ago when they built this!

This one's awesome man, really nice shot! And another that you just wouldn't know was a smartphone!

Thanks! This is one I wonder if a real camera would make a difference where you can change settings to get different results. But I've always loved this. This is also a completely unedited shot. Not from lack of trying, but this was one of those cases where editing didn't make the photo better and in some versions, made it worse.

I think you'd definitely get more detail in the highlights, you'd be able to get more out of the shadows too but I don't think it really needs that. That's the nice thing about smartphones compared to 'proper' cameras, the images usually come out pretty well straight out of camera. If you're using RAW images look pretty boring straight out of camera! That's one of the things I miss about my Fuji, the colour profiles were lovely so I just shot in JPEG a lot of the time. The Olympus and Canon presets aren't really great although it's all about the RAW any way I guess!

Hello @schmidthappens, that a great shot, beautifully framed and I love the contrasting light sources. BTW, I nominated you take part in the Seven day Black and White photo Challenge in my last post.

Love this ladder and the light. Feel like I could be having a secret prohibition party down there
