Declinaba la tarde;
no fue escuchado el ruego.
Inexorable, el hacha mantenía
su latido funesto,
y el árbol se quejaba a cada golpe,
y la tarde gemía en cada eco,
y el sol en el ocaso
cerró de prisa su ojo por no verlo.
