As you begin getting a smart start on anything, you will benefit most by knowing why success is so important. On a much deeper note, you may be asking yourself, “Isn’t having a normal life as good as any other?” For me, asking this question means you don’t know what success is. Many people who are successful have a “normal life”.

We speak of normal as something less than, and we speak of success as something more than. That is not what success or normal is. The question leads us to “what is normal,” and “what is success.” Success is a skill set, just like mowing the lawn. It is simply an ability to set your sights on something and achieve it. Normal is simply something that is typical or usual. It’s normal to see the stars in the sky at night. It is a typical occurrence. When we see the stars at night, we don’t think they are “less than” because it is normal.

When our blood pressure is normal, we are happy about that. The confusion between normal and success creates lack of clarity. We often begin trying to overcome vs. implement a new skill. Success implements a new path or skill set we wish to experience, but it doesn’t define “normal” as something less than.

The beauty of success is that you get to choose the aim, and how high or difficult your target is. Many people find that when they are reaching for success, they feel more alive, aware, and awake. Every morning they get up with something they are seeking to achieve and that makes them feel better about themselves. They have some goal they look forward to achieving. Having success is a powerful way of bringing quality of life to your world. It gives you more confidence just like other skill sets do.

Do you remember when you learned how to ride a bike? That learning helped you to overcome fear. You acquired a new skill set… the ability to go places faster and farther than walking. When learning how to ride a bike, most kids learn a very important life skill: fall off the bike and get back on it. They see the cut, injury, or scrape, then get back onto the seat and pedal again as hard as they can. They remember the joy of riding the bike, and not the injury that happened. Knowing how to ride a bike adds quality of life.

Learning the skill sets of success is like riding a bicycle. It’s enjoyable to succeed. It teaches you things you never knew about yourself.

Here are 3 reasons why success is so important:

  1. Success provides us with a fresh point of view. It helps us confront ourselves and outline what we actually want. We welcome new ideas and possibilities. Our mind becomes open to finding and learning new things. This fresh perspective adds a new quality of life and gives us something to look forward to in our lives. We get to meet a part of ourselves we may not have known. This is an enjoyable experience to have.

  2. It provides a way to meet our own inner ability, to make choices, and become more responsible. One of the greatest aspects of success is that it empowers the individual. We find great pleasure in commanding our outcomes. We blame less and become more self-responsible because that is what success requires. It’s no different than having to use the peddles on a bicycle. It is what is required to gain forward motion. When we gain forward motion using the skill set of success, we learn to command our outcomes.

  3. To get a smart start on having more success means understanding the difference between “normal” and “success”. It also means that success can become a normal occurrence in your life. Success is the incremental development of skill sets that provide quality of life, opportunities, and confidence. Having success is quite normal.
