To Debbie Taylor and Grover Washington, Jr. | SML Challenge Week Five

in smlchallenge •  7 years ago

This is my submission for this week's Steemit Music League Challenge (presented by @chiefmappster). This week's theme is 90's Hip-Hop. I won't go into detail about how important this era is to me -- perhaps in another post, or a series of posts. Just know that this era is a significant fabric to my being.

.

You'll discover quickly that I'm a sample-based beatmaker. So for this week, my submission is a tribute to Debbie Taylor and George Washington, Jr.

For the majority of the beat, I sampled Debbie Taylor's Let's Prove Them Wrong, produced by George Kerr and Paul Robinson on GWP Records in 1969. Maydie Myles, professionally known as Debbie Taylor, is an American soul and jazz singer who is highly acclaimed for her recordings in the 1960s and 1970s. She has been active since 1964 until the present, with a hiatus from 1975 to the 1990s.

For additional sounds, I sampled the Norman Whitifield produced Masterpiece by Grover Washington, Jr. off Grover Jr.'s third album, Soul Box, released in 1973. American jazz-funk/soul-jazz Saxophonist Grover Washington, Jr. is considered by many to be one of the founders of the smooth jazz genre. At the age of 8, Grover Sr. gave Jr. a saxophone. He practiced and would sneak into clubs to see famous Buffalo blues musicians.

Thanks for listening @chiefmappster! I enjoy sharing the original samples: A. It gives insight into how I, as the beatmaker, approach samples; and B. The people deserve to have an opportunity to appreciate timeless music.
