A review of Allen Carr's Easyway to Stop Smoking.
The Easy Way to Stop Smoking is a self-help book written by British author, former smoker and accountant Allen Carr. The book aims to help people quit smoking permanently. It was first published in 1985 and is the most famous book of Carr's, as it resonated widely in the world and became a international bestseller. Carr writes that smoking addiction is psychological in nature and therefore this is the most significant factor in addiction to cigarettes. The book itself is divided into 44 chapters, whose purpose is to lead the smoker to, upon completion of reading the book, make the decision to quit smoking permanently.
I must admit that I was fairly dubious about Carr's claims that giving up smoking using his method would be easy. I had already stopped smoking before reading Carr's book and had found it incredibly difficult to quit but I felt that I was still an addict. As Carr correctly pointed out in his book, I still was an addict even though I wasn't smoking because I was still sucked in by the brainwashing surrounding cigarettes and I thought that I was making a sacrifice by giving up.
I read both his Easyway to Stop Smoking and The Little Book of Quitting and I have to say that I thought that they were really good. Carr's main thesis is that there are no redeeming features of smoking, that it is an addiction bolstered by brain washing. I must confess having read his books that I think that he is right. In the books Carr demolishes one by one all the reasons why smokers cling to the habit. He dispels all of the myths about smoking, that it relaxes you, that it relieves boredom and that you enjoy it. Instead he takes you through a journey of unpacking the brainwashing by society and the tobacco companies.
Do I think that Carr's method worked? That is hard to say as I had already given up smoking. I certainly agree with everything that he wrote, but I am still dubious about his assertions that giving up smoking and the associated withdrawals are easy to manage. Personally I found the process extremely hard but admittedly I was still sucked in by the brainwashing surrounding the weed.
Would I recommend his book to someone else? Yes, definitely. Any tool that can help you give up is worth it.

It worked for me. I was a pack a day for 12 years.
Still took me another year or so after I read the book, but it was the perspective in the book that helped me over the line.
10/10. Highly recommend.

I have to admit that I feel pretty good about myself. And yes, I think that my partner will be coming on Sunday, it's at 1pm isnt it? :)

Yup. 1pm. We might hit 20 people, which would be perfect; especially for sleepy ol' Adelaide :)

It's been over 3 years now without a smoke for this previous addict.
Feel like I not only got my health back but spare money to spend on things I enjoy 🙂
I don't think any remedy or idea can be ruled out unless your give it a try first.
Cold turkey was the only way for me but everyone is different.
