I have gripes with Kim Foxx's Op-ed on the Smollett case.

"Smollett was indicted, tried and convicted by a kangaroo prosecution in a matter of months. Meanwhile, the families of more than 50 Black women murdered in Chicago over the last 20 years await justice."

This is the paragraph, particularly the last sentence, that hurt my brain hurt.

First of all, no, this wasn't a Kangaroo prosecution. If anybody behaved badly, it was you, Miss Foxx, when you tossed out the findings of a grand jury to protect your wealthy, well connected friend. Incidentally, Foxx never even claimed that Smollett was innocent. She simply claims that it doesn't matter that he's guilty.

As for that last claim, she didn't cite anything; so, I'm not even sure what she means.

Fifty women over the last twenty years could include a woman murdered last month. If she's saying that an alleged murderer has been awaiting trial for twenty years, there's more than one injustice happening and part of that is on Foxx.

My assumption is that she's talking about murders that have gone unsolved. Namely, she's trying to turn everything that people on the right side of this have been saying about how Smollett's hoax diverted attention, time, and resources from real crimes and flip it.

The problem is, that doesn't work logically for two seconds. Last I checked, once a person is through the grand jury process, the cops have done most of their work. Miss Foxx's decision to try to get Smollett off did nothing and never was going to do anything to speed up the process of finding those murderers. What Smollett did, however, may well have slowed that process.

Perhaps Miss Foxx forgot that Smollett went along with getting the police involved. He lied to the police repeatedly. The police didn't see him doing his media tour and decide to maliciously slander him on their own. No, the police found Smollett out because they were investigating a hate crime.

If Miss Foxx wants to include component in her argument that the legal persual of Smollett was a waste, she would have to argue that investigations of hate crimes are wastes.

I doubt she wants to make that argument.
