Wildlife lovers have captured an amazing landscape near Oymyakon, the famous "pole of cold". The strange evening relief resembled thousands of marshmallows on snowy fields.
In fact, there is nothing unusual in such a phenomenon — these are heave mounds, or, as they are called in Yakutia, bulgunni. Heaving mounds occur in the area of long-term and seasonal permafrost as a result of uneven ice formation. The height of such mounds can be very different — from tens of centimeters to 70 m, and the diameter can reach 300 m. Perennial bulgunni are the largest, and are found in the Arctic and subarctic regions. Seasonal heaving mounds occur in areas with less severe climatic conditions and deep seasonal thawing of frozen soils.
