So, as I continue to learn about this website and check out interesting content, I thought I would post a handful of observations and questions I have. Feel free to answer in the comments section OR ignore this and move on to other things. Cool, either way.
a) What does the number next to my username mean?
b) I know that there is a #socalsteemit group, but are there actual real life meetup groups for #steemians?
c) Can we post any topic we want or do we need to stay limited to the tags?
d) Do #Steemians care about non #crypto things or is this a community that is strictly about upvoting and earning? That's going to get old quick, for me.
These are the basic questions I have, to date. My goal is to leave meaningful comments on posts that I find interesting to my tastes. There is zero nutritional value in me soliciting upvotes or any of that stuff. I'm on a quest to learn about new things and this is my new chew toy.
Read. Comment. Rinse. Repeat.
a- that number is your reputation. Upvotes from people with a higher rep will make your rep go up, flags from people with a higher rep will make your rep go down.
b- @socalsteemit does at least 1 "in real life" meetup every month. And there are more Steemit groups popping up all over the world now.
c- you can post anything you want and use any words you want as tags. Your not limited to the top tags, but they are the more popular ones to use. Just try to use tags that are relevant to your post. If you use tags that are irrelevant to your post just because they are popular you could get flagged and then your reputation will go down.
d- There is all kinds of awesome stuff on Steemit besides crypto stuff. Some of my favorite posts are travel posts, hiking posts, gardening posts, music, art pieces... it goes on and on. There's pretty much everything on Steemit. You just gotta find the people that are writing about the stuff you're interested in.
Hope that helps you out. If you have anymore questions just let me know.
