Gareth Bale has one word for those asking why he didn’t leave Real Madrid for Manchester United in the summer: Trophies.
The Wales star, 28, has seen his place at the Santiago Bernabeu come under bigger threat over the last few months, with both Isco and Marco Asensio compete for his place in the European champions attack.
Bale’s season has made something of a slow start, and he came in for condemnation after their weekend draw with Levante.
But the twenty eight year-old is a major part of a Madrid side looking to make it three Champions League victory in a row, starting their game against Anderlecht on Wednesday night.
The Madrid star could have been wearing red at club level and starting his European struggle on Tuesday against Basel, with Jose Mourinho once more interested in taking Bale to Manchester united.
But Bale assert that, the period Neymar left Barcelona to become the face of Paris Saint-Germain, he was never close to leaving Madrid to become key player at Old Trafford
“Well there’s an argument for that,’ he told the Daily Mail, when asked if he would have left Santiago Bernabeu to be the main star in Manchester United”.
“But I think the crucial thing, when you look back on your career, is that you look at your trophies.
In the end that’s probably the most paramount thing.”
Gareth Bale isn’t the only Tottenham player eyeing a fourth European Cup since signing for Real Madrid, with Luka Modric looking to once more command Europe also.
And Bale has disclosed that the Croatian play maker was a major factor behind his own move from Spurs to Spain.
“We have a good relationship together at Tottenham,” added Bale.
Him being here was a reason why I came to Real Madrid. I knew what a good player he was.
“I think he helped me feel at home a lot quicker. Having someone to help you is great especially with such a massive move overseas.”
