Spain (as expected) scored first in the 11th minute. Instantly... Spain relaxed... settled back and played a big game of ‘keep-a-way’. Rather than taking a snooze, the crowd started a wave.
In the 40th minute an obviously unintentional hand ball rewarded Russia with a successful penalty kick. The score at the half was 1-1
Spain dominated possession for the entire match, however the score did not change. Four minutes of extra time was added to the end of the 2nd half without resolution.
Two 15 minute sections were added to conclude the match. These did not resolve the match.
Russia eventually wins on penalty kicks by a miraculous save off the foot of a diving goal keeper.
Big name don’t win match team work does, Spain they were play their normal style of passing the ball around and look for how to score world class goals , Russia kept their and defended to the end of the game knowing fully well that their goal keeper will come to their rescue as he sent them to play in the quarterfinals for the first time in 48 years!
