Liverpool is a club with a rich history and plenty deep pockets. However, in comparison to the vast coffers that Manchester City and PSG have access to, Liverpool is just a member of football's upper-middle class. Money decent enough to spend on good players but a far cry from Europe's biggest clubs. And it is these same big clubs that find themselves so overstocked with players that they sell or release players that become incredible talents.
One need only look at Chelsea as an example to see this. There was a time where Chelsea had the two best Premier League players on their roster; Kevin De Bruyne and Mohamed Salah. In 2014, Chelsea scooped Salah up for a small fee of US$19-million. Because he was acquired so cheaply, Chelsea took little trouble in developing him and giving him game time. He was confined to the bench for a while before going on loan to Italy twice. Eventually, he was sold for a small profit. After finding his feet through regular play in Serie A, Salah returned to the Premier League for what now seems like a ludicrously low price of US$60-million.
At the very same time, Chelsea was giving Kevin De Bruyne equal treatment. Both players are now considered the most valuable players in English football and two of the top players in the world.
Liverpool is now in the finals of the Champions League unlike Chelsea, and should they win; it is a victory for every team that has to use their brains rather than buy their way out. The majority of the Liverpool's squad is constructed of players of top quality, but their names don’t ring out, and they don't fetch astronomical sums of money. This can be said of Roma as well, who struggled and fought their way to the semi-finals, beating the likes of Chelsea(ironically) and Barcelona.
Liverpool and Roma can do everything right on the pitch, but they cannot change their financial status so quickly. They will always be a team that aims to turn a profit every year, against teams that are built to pour cash into purchasing players endlessly.
As long as this continues, football's middle class will always be a hunting ground for the rich. All they can hope to do is outsmart and outmaneuver clubs that they can never expect to outspend.
