Socialist government in Nicaragua shuts down "critical" TV Station.

Another example of what happens when there is neither respect for nor legal protection of private property rights: the loss of civil as well as economic liberty. In this case, the socialist government in Nicaragua seizes news outlets and arrests their staff due to their carrying coverage of criticisms of the leader, Daniel Ortega, and his collectivist regime.

But, wait! What happened to the recent promises by Bernie Sanders and others that economic liberty may be abridged or abolished with no threat or denial of personal and civil liberties? “Democratic Socialism.”

Oh, I get it. That works under one of two scenarios: (a) people and the media never challenge or criticise those in power, or, (b) those in power don’t mind, indeed, love to be criticised and threatened with removal in the next election.

In Daniel Ortega’s case, all criticisms of his regime are — wait for it — “fake news,” and therefore cannot be tolerated against the interests of “the people,” which he embodies in all he thinks and does.

Once again, F.A Hayek’s “Road to Serfdom” is shown to be far from being out of date.
