The Grapes of Wrath.

I don't know how I didn't know about this until last night; but, this is deeply illustrative of how out of touch privileged socialists can be.

When the film adaptation of The Grapes of Wrath was released in 1940, it became one of the few American movies that Stalin's regime, not only allowed, but promoted in the Soviet Union.

The reason was that Stalin saw the movie as we Americans confessing that life can be utter misery under capitalism.

Stalin wanted the Soviet citizens to see the movie in order to understand how much better they had it under socialism.

The problem was that The Grapes of Wrath depicted these poor Americans having access to cars, which nearly no Soviet citizen outside of the party's brass could have. Most of the Soviet citizens who saw The Grapes of Wrath saw the depictions of the poorest Americans during the Depression, and thought that their lives would be a step up from the average Soviet life.

Of course, the film was quickly banned by Stalin's regime once they realized the mistake.
