A good question to ask don't you think with the 'Russian Hacking Scandal' still in the news, although a more accurate description would be 'The Russian Manipulation Scandal'

Manipulation for Money
It's a sad fact that anytime you use a commercial platform to socialise online, they're going to collect data, analyse it to better target you for their own ends, then sell the data to advertisers so they too can target you better.
Then there's the 'big data' companies who will buy your data and not to be ignored, the government who can demand it. Most companies will tell you they don't "sell" your email address, which they possibly don't, but the data they collect on you? That's an entirely different matter. That's why platforms like Steemit and OnG Social are so important. Social media on the blockchain is less open to manipulation.
