The Western approach to counselling has failed. It's a colonialist mechanism, that doesn't feel right to a lot of people. Where do you draw strength from? My people, my friends, my community, my values, the land itself, music, and my own belief systems.
Suicide is so very common now, it has become the number one cause of death in many places for youth. They need meaning, purpose, internal motivation. They can't do any of that under home imprisonment.
When you look at a bunch of indigenous cultures around the world, they don't treat depression with paying a ton of money talking with therapists and drugs with horrific side effects. They use ritual, sorry business, dietary changes including herbs, music and dance, showing that they still have a place in the greater community and are not alone with their whole bodies.
Knowing that 80% of communication is non-verbal, how could talk therapy possibly be effective all by itself? We are human. We are tribal. We need so much more than words on a screen to be emotionally healthy.
