I’ve been an expert in social media marketing for years, but now I’m making the switch to decentralized social media and moving my freelance marketing business along with it.
But why am I focusing in on decentralized social media and what is it in the first place?
What is decentralized social media?
Traditionally, social media platforms have been created and operated by a single entity. Usually this corporation is in charge of policing the platform, pushing updates, and controlling the platforms algorithm.
However there have been several concerns about this recently for both businesses and individuals.
From a business perspective, it can be hard to adapt to ever changing algorithms which often cuts down on your ROI. Additionally, platforms are incentivized to lower your organic reach in order to force you to spend money on advertising.
For individuals traditional social media presents huge privacy concerns. Privacy scandals seem to be increasingly common and many users are simple sick or having their life’s data sold to the highest bidder.
Decentralized social media seeks to overcome these challenges and present unique benefits while doing so. At its core, decentralized social media is any platform based on block chain technology.
This means no 1 entity controls the platform and instead it’s split among the platform’s miners.
One of the more popular examples of decentralized social media is Steem, which is poised to pass 1M accounts this month.
Benefits of Decentralized Social Media
Decentralized social media, sometimes also called blockchain based social media, has a few powerful benefits.
For one, censorship isn’t controlled by one entity. Instead posts are policed by the crowd. This works surprisingly well with several members of the community dedicated to catching those stealing others content, posting illegal content, and more. Bad content is flagged causing it to not be shown on the platform.
Another key benefit is that there is no advertising. This results in a scenario where choices are made about how to best serve the platform, not how to milk money out of companies in the form of ads.
Privacy concerns are of the past as well since nobody can sell your data like they could on other platforms!
Lastly, many of these blockchain based social media platforms provide incentive for people to post, comment, and upvote by rewarding creators with cryptocurrency. This presents a unique opportunity for both individuals who can earn some spare cash and for brands who can receive engagement on a level that surpasses other platforms!
How is Decentralized Social Media Marketing Different from Traditional Social Media Marketing
Here’s the big question. If it’s social media, why is it any different than normal social media marketing?
Decentralized social media marketing is different from traditional social media marketing because the knowledge, tactics and strategies needed for success are different.
Decentralized social media has several nuances and doesn’t at all behave like your typical social media network. Things that would be considered black hat on other social media networks are widely accepted on blockchain based networks. Similarly things that are fine on other platforms are looked down on in the Decentralized world.
Other considerations need to be made too! For example, because a platform is decentralized there maybe many user interfaces created for it. Steem has steemit, busy, DTube, DLive and more. Each of these platforms have slightly different sized cover photos and designs making it difficult, but not impossible to design your posts and profiles.
Understanding these nuances is key to performing well on the platforms and is the reason for Decentralized Social Media Marketing’a existence.
Conclusion
Currently, I’m leading the charge in decentralized social media marketing. I’m conducting the research and experiments needed to guide others towards success as decentralized social is on a path to disrupt the social media industry.
