I have had more meaningful conversation in the comments during my short time on Steemit than years on facebook and I can't figure out why. Comments don't usually make money but Steemit seems to have more engagement than Facebook and Facebook has the highest engagement rate of any social media. Is the content I am posting here simply that much better because I've already been conditioned to think about curation before I post? crazy.
Steemit already surpassing Facebook ?

I've had the same experience. I've ditched FB and the vibe here alone is much more worth being here - and you have potential to make something from posts, so it's a win win for everyone. The quality of the posts are high up, and also since we can only post 4 a day to get rewards that will cut down on the off the cuff posts. Right now this hasn't quite hit mainstream and when it does those "negatives" will try to pull this down to FB level. I hope not, and I hope the developers continue to make this a better place by having better flagging systems. Steem on! :)

Right now Steemit is dominated by innovators , crypto-experimeters, anarcho-capitalists and minarchists. You've got a more intelligent and intellectually open crowd than Facebook.
One reason to keep the flagging option open will be to protect us from the SJW (although they should properly be called Fainting Couch Cows) internet lynch mob when they inevitably show up.

I have been trying to get folks to use that term instead of SJW, which is a lie on all three counts, for 6 months now. Hasn't taken off at all.
I guess nobody wants to take the risk of being swamped by pudgy virgins with permascowls and the moldering odor of unused graduate degrees ;)

I notice that the environment that people preside tends to lead to a more industrious society. Perhaps this is also true in technology with social networking.

Nice post! Paradigm shifts in thinking are interesting to experience. For me, FB has lost its "real" factor. People seem to cling to meme posting and sharing articles. Few, anymore, are creating their own posts or are sharing their own original thoughts. Combine that with advertising and it's just like, tv...a mindless activity with little quality of life improvement at the end of the day. I feel quite the opposite about Steemit. It stimulates thought and fosters learning. It feels "real"and I was pleasantly surprised at how comfortable it has been to communicate with strangers, almost instantly, about all kinds of interesting stuff. Must be a frequency thing. lol

Isnt this ultimately comparing apples and oranges though? Steemit and Facebook are very different environments don't you agree?
