If you spend even a small amount of time on any Social Media, you will soon recognize that most Social Media sites are a breeding ground for narcissists.

To truly understand this concept, it is important to understand the meaning of the word Narcissist.

Psychology Today published an article with an in depth look at the definition, characteristics, symptoms, causes, and treatment of Narcissism. Text Source

Narcissistic Personality Disorder

Individuals with this disorder exhibit a lack of ability to empathize with others and an inflated sense of self-importance.

Definition

The hallmarks of Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) are grandiosity, a lack of empathy for other people, and a need for admiration. People with this condition are frequently described as arrogant, self-centered, manipulative, and demanding. They may also concentrate on grandiose fantasies (e.g. their own success, beauty, brilliance) and may be convinced that they deserve special treatment. These characteristics typically begin in early adulthood and must be consistently evident in multiple contexts, such as at work and in relationships.

People with narcissistic personality disorder believe they are superior or special, and often try to associate with other people they believe are unique or gifted in some way. This association enhances their self-esteem, which is typically quite fragile underneath the surface. Individuals with NPD seek excessive admiration and attention in order to know that others think highly of them. Individuals with narcissistic personality disorder have difficulty tolerating criticism or defeat, and may be left feeling humiliated or empty when they experience an "injury" in the form of criticism or rejection.

Symptoms

Narcissistic personality disorder is indicated by five or more of the following symptoms:

  • Exaggerates own importance

  • Is preoccupied with fantasies of success, power, beauty, intelligence or ideal romance

  • Believes he or she is special and can only be understood by other special people or institutions

  • Requires constant attention and admiration from others

  • Has unreasonable expectations of favorable treatment

  • Takes advantage of others to reach his or her own goals

  • Disregards the feelings of others, lacks empathy

  • Is often envious of others or believes other people are envious of him or her

  • Shows arrogant behaviors and attitudes

50 to 75 percent of the people diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder are male. Additionally, it is common for many adolescents to display the characteristics listed above; this does not indicate that they will later develop narcissistic personality disorder.

Causes

Causes of narcissistic personality disorder are not yet well-understood. Genetic and biological factors as well as environment and early life experiences are all thought to play a role in the development of this condition.

Treatments

Treatment for narcissistic personality disorder can be challenging because people with this condition present with a great deal of grandiosity and defensiveness, which makes it difficult for them to acknowledge problems and vulnerabilities. Individual and group psychotherapy may be useful in helping people with narcissistic personality disorder relate to others in a healthier and more compassionate way. Mentalization-based therapy, transference-focused psychotherapy, and schema-focused psychotherapy have all been suggested as effective ways of treating narcissistic personality disorder.

Narcissistic personalities are in great abundance on Facebook. The Narcissist will consistently seek attention by posting their life events that draw attention to how wonderful their life is, (or designed to create the illusion of how wonderful their life is). They thrive on the attention of others. They are obsessed with getting attention.

Steemit, on the other hand, does not cater to Narcissists to the same degree as other social media. Steemit motivates is users to post quality content to receive monetary rewards. The result is much higher quality content than most other social media sites.

So, in conclusion, you can feel good about yourself, because you are a member of Steemit, a classy social media site.

Thank you for visiting. I hope you have a great day!

Thank you @rocksg!

yeah i know a couple of people here in NZ that are as well (not on steemit)...self first self last self always

For sure. The center of the universe syndrome. 👍🏼😎

@michaelstobiersk,
I got lots of messages related to unethical things on FB! I mean it's a good source to spread information, but they are abusing the power of Social media! A very bad thing and it's hard to shut off as well! If we take i as a good, it will be a real good source to get instant news and updates! But if we use it for bad, it's a worst enemy of man kind as well! Great discussion bro!

Cheers~

Thank you @theguruasia!

I can agree with your some points. some ones disagree, Totally true.

Great insight, but actually narcissists have empathy and they are too feeling of their own feeling. I agree social media has helped some narcissists who couldn't reach alot of me 😂😂.
Feeling good when they are being worshipped.
I have realised some take it personal and others just don't care. Guess they are some types in narcissism.

Thank you @farseer!

Interesting post. Social media can be a negative yes. Steemit is definitely a positive one

Haha why would you call steem positive? :D
I guess the steem because of being a blog type media, can work better in comparison to others

I call it positive because it’s promoting effort and work. It’s promoting quality posts and for people to actually work at something besides for sitting back and looking at their own and other people’s selfies all day. Lol. You understand what I’m saying?

That selfie thing was great Lol yeah that was also my point

Haha!

I understand.

It is much better than the others.

Sure is!

Everything has its own pros and cons social media has caused an awareness between people. Steemit as of now is the best platform to showcase your talent :) nice post @michaelstobiersk

Thank you @sid9999!

Thank you for discussing the narcissistic problem experienced by some people, obviously through some activities in various social networking platforms. Here's an idea behind your theme is that the Stimet platform does not provide this type of people with what they like because it only supports meaningful themes and thank you for your wonderful topic useful and purposeful
