Things are getting worser than they used before. Youtube is about to add option of promoting comment's with real money and making Community Guidelines more restrictive , Facebook blocks politicians and activists and so on.
If you are looking for alternatives these are best:
youtube - BitChute
facebook - Diaspora
(both of them are fully safe and does not sells your privacy out)

I'm trying to get off of here so I can check out Bit Chute. I've checked Vid.me which seems ok but still in it's infancy so it doesn't have the range of stuff available (for now) on Y-Tube. I'll look into Diaspora, thanks. I'm looking for an alternative to Facebook. I have a lot of friends there that aren't into any "objectionable" stuff, pics of kids & grand kids, dogs and things like that. They'll never leave.

That's really the biggest appeal of facebook. It enables you to easily share pics of the kids or whatever with many people you know all in one spot. A true replacement not only has to enable you to do that, but somehow convince everyone to start using that replacement. No matter how good it is, a replacement is useless if the people you are interested in sharing with aren't there.

You got that right...I've been trying to get friends from FB over here and nobody will budge!

To be fair, steemit isn't really useful for sharing pictures and those sorts of things with your friends (I mean you can't even upload pictures directly). It just isn't that kind of social media site. Something like Diaspora would be better but it isn't quite as user friendly or as full featured...and then there is the already mentioned problem of getting everyone to move there.

I looked at Diaspora...it looked like they want you to pay for it. I'm on Gab.ai, but they have the same problem with pictures, you have to upload from a secondary site. There's also the character restriction (200 I think)

Diaspora is free (go to diasp.org if that wasn't where you tried). They do donation drives from time to time but it is not required that you donate and there are no "premium" features or anything like that. I haven't tried Gab.ai yet...
