All the world's a stage

I do not know how politics work in your country, but in mine there is a very simple strategy used by politicians when they are in the news for negative reasons. They simply flood all channels of communication with a different story on a different topic until we forget what they do not want out there. An interesting enough story is not always readily available. Disasters seem to keep their own timetable with very little consideration for anyone's convenience. Thus they create a story that will take our attention away from whatever is embarrassing them at that moment.

We are already flooded with information and news in a way that is unprecedented in human history. Nothing can be kept hidden in our day and the strategy seems to by not to choke off information but to flood us with so much information that it all just becomes white noise. There is so much 'fake news' out there, it has become difficult to find the truth.

I am not a conspiracy theorist and in principle reject anything that sounds like a conspiracy. And I think we are getting better at discerning fact from fiction as we spend more time online and find our way through this maze of information. Somewhere our politicians will shoot themselves in the foot by using this strategy. This will be fatal as their feet are seemingly always in their mouths. 😁

However, I see more and more people venture out in this huge world, adding their voices to channels that will reach further than anyone can imagine. I am sure a politician or a movie star or a celebrity receives a lot of guidance on the implications of anything they do in the public eye. They use words like 'brand' and how to manage and protect it.

The rest of us are used to voicing our opinions to a small group of people and, I for one, am very used to being ignored or my opinion forgot shortly after I pontificated on a point. It just does not matter that much what I said yesterday.

But now, someone like me can voice his opinion to the whole world. And once I have done that, it is out there forever. No one has trained me for this or explained the risks but I am on an international stage. Yes, millions of other people are too and most days I struggle to be noticed just here on Steemit. What if I do get noticed?!? And what if I get noticed for the wrong reasons?!?

In the last three years, I employed, on behalf of three different organisations, 11 different people. This boils down to at least 50 applications that made it to an interview with me. I did not enter any of those interviews without taking a look at that person's social media. Some of them did not even make it to the interview because of what I saw on their social media. Every decision I made was at least somewhat influenced by what I saw on their social media. It answered questions I would never be able to ask in an interview.

There are more repercussions possible. It is important that you are wise and careful regarding what you post on social media.

  1. Don't attack anyone, and I mean anyone, on social media.
  2. Don't reveal any personal details about squabbles, break-ups, vendettas or feuds.
  3. Don't share anything about which you do not want to answer questions in a job interview.
  4. No nudity.
  5. No pictures of you inebriated in any way.
  6. Stay away from any emotionally charged topics. It is OK to have an opinion but not to demean or attack someone else's opinion.

Be wise! This is forever. There is no little private corner. No door to close behind you. You are on a stage and the whole world could be watching. The fact that they are not right now, is no guarantee that they will never watch. And whatever you post today, will still be available for them to see.

Be wise!

All the world’s a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts,

(William Shakespeare)

When people get onto a stage they get very nervous as they are very aware of everyone watching. On social media we can easily fool ourselves into thinking no one is watching. That would be unwise.

Be wise!

Are you a Nigerian ? Because the situation yiure describing is synonymous with my country, one more thing the idea of distracting the populace by giving them a fake news is a global thing . its done by the big brothers cnn bbc and many more.
I strongly agree with your precautions.

This is an extended topic to talk about it. Very nice post ID @mejia_martinez

Wise words. I'm fairly careful about what I post. If I comment on political or media related topics, I'm always doing my research. Mostly I just unfriend or hide topics I think are BS. I do see a major problem with younger people posting because they see the likes of the Kardashians or other famous people getting more attention and they want to try and get fame like they have. They just don't consider or care what they post. It's going to come back to them. Visiting from kryptonia

Social media has become a battlefield here in America and our bully in chief has become the leader of the fight against "the other" and those who have different opinions. Sadly, violence and physical threats against non-supporters are becoming commonplace outside the social media sphere and due to social media. I can't say it is all social media's fault, much of the hatred has been taught from the pulpit, inside private clubs, and from parent to child for hundreds of years so the beliefs and hatred already existed, but social media has made it more "acceptable" to spew the vitriol openly and outside sheltered dark corners of America. It has and will backfire on those bringing it into the light of day. Many are losing their jobs for their social media antics and posts easily found by researchers, lawyers, and employers. I hope it cools down soon, but I believe it will get worse with every tweet war and press release made from the White House that stirs up people to act on their hatred for their fellow man.

Absolutely brilliant post. Working in social media, I am ALWAYS very careful what I say on my own timeline (After all, I have a LOT of clients who follow me.) Regardless of this, you should always think before you speak (or type.) and there is a saying in the UK "Never do your dirty laundry in Public"... If you are upset with someone, speak to them, not broadcast it to the world ;)

My view is quite simple. Say whatever you want to say. Once you surrender your freedom to the thought police it is over. Take for example what is happening in late night in the US of A. There is no comedy. Only commentary about how they hate the President. Try being funny for once. It is suppose to be comedy. But we will not take your right to hate the President. Just be funny. Hating Trump is getting old as a means to appease the liberals. Also you have every right to use social media as a basis to screen applicants but you have no right to police their thoughts that is how they were brought up. @kryptonia

Politics is the same everywhere it is the art of knowing how to confuse people and take advantage of it. As for the social media part, yes everyone has to be careful and learn how to use it, because social media is here to stay. Kryptonia.

This story of yours is just the same ways of my country Nigeria... Good story ideal... And wonderful knowledge of yours...

I do love sharing my opinion but I didn't meant to harm other. I just like sharing some of my thoughts that I myself think that could help to increase more positivity in this world stage we have. I am also all ears for other opinions. Thank you for sharing this wonderful post @reonlouw

Politicians are the same anywhere in the world ... they know how to tease and confuse the masses. Social media is sometimes the simplest trap ... everyone observes, everyone thinks, everyone can ....
kryptonia@v2m3p01

It's also the same in our country.

Wow, this is great, really. Thanks for share with all of us! Very much knowledge..

We've got similar situations too in terms of politics. We must be vigilant always as to what is happening to our place and be able to decipher what is real from fake news. Upvoted by rubelynmacion of kryptonia

I think you have explained well about Don't s in politics. But what about Do's in politics. We need visionary leaders. I wanna mention one thing here. Now a days in politics it has become a habbit that they are doing politics for their entire life instead of doing it while elections. This is the reason why the common man is suffering all the time. Development is the need of the hour. This happens only with leaders not with politicians. Mindset of the voter needs to change. Upvote from kryptonia as kcherukuri

yes if u have talent the whole world is a stage to show @crytonia

What you said in this post is very true and we have similar situations too! Knowing real from fake news is very hard to know this days.

You know? I have been thinking about this too... I was used to have my opinion ignored, that changed when some people started to ask me about my opinion on facebook, but that was for one niche and I consider myself good at it.

But now, someone like me can voice his opinion to the whole world. And once I have done that, it is out there forever. No one has trained me for this or explained the risks but I am on an international stage.

What if I do get noticed?!? And what if I get noticed for the wrong reasons?!?

It drives fear when you think about it that way, be a good person... Then even if you were attacked, people won't be happy about it.

Funny thing is, all the points of advice you mentioned are things I already do by instinct from the beginning... Though I think I'm guilty of things you haven't mentioned.
