Do you track time at work? And how much do you pay for the time tracker?
If the answer is "more than $500" (or more than $0 really), you'll be happy to know that there's a new time tracker that works exactly like Toggl but that's 100% free.
Clockify, a new app for tracking time, recently launched on Product Hunt. What makes it different from all the other time trackers is that Clockify is the only app that’s free, even for big teams.
Toggl beginnings
If you’re a fairly big company, there is nothing on the market that’s both easy to use and doesn’t cost a fortune.
The team behind Clockify, COING Development, were initially big Toggl users. They loved Toggl’s simplicity and ease of use. But, one day Toggl raised prices to $20 per user. Because COING had around 50 employees, and each one had to track time, Toggl costed the company close to $1000 each month. So, they decided it was time to search for an alternative.
I own a software development agency and we were paying Toggl around $500 each month so all employees could log their time. That’s too much money for something so simple. So we created Clockify. It has everything agencies such as mine really need, without costing a fortune. - Nenad Sean Milanovic, CEO at COING
After analyzing what’s out there, the team didn’t find anything that’s web-based, easy to use, and cost-efficient.
All time trackers charged based on number of users and offered a ton of features that a typical development agency doesn’t really need.
So, the team decided to create their own Toggl alternative. After finishing the app, the team made Clockify public so everyone could use it free of charge.
About Clockify
Clockify has all the basic time tracking features (such as timer mode and ability to add time manually), several types of reports, and a few other features.
I work for a small agency in Portland. Last year we started to hire new employees consistently and needed a better way to keep track of everyone's time, projects, and budgets in one place. Enter, Toggl! It seemed like a dream come true except... you had to pay per month and per person! There was no way our little company could afford that, and the cost, honestly, didn't make much sense to us. But then we found your product and were overjoyed! Now that Clockify is available, I have even higher hopes for our company's success this year.
The team plans to continue working on Clockify and developing new features, while keeping Clockify free forever.
How come it's free?
COING, the company behind Clockify, is a consulting shop that develops custom solutions for some big clients all over the world. So, they can cover Clockify development costs from the money they make while consulting.
In addition to consulting, COING offers a self-hosted version of Clockify, for a fee. The self-hosted version has the same features as the free cloud version, only you can install Clockify on your own servers. This is great for companies that have strict privacy policy, which rules out 99% of apps that offer cloud-only solution.
COING also offers their custom development expertise so they can integrate Clockify with customer’s own systems (like payroll, homegrown project management solutions, etc.).
