AR Rahman scores on sound, but the tunes lack life

A few seconds into ‘Endhira Logathu Sundariye’ and I wondered if Hiphop Tamizha Aadhi was secretly roped in for the music; the heavily-autotuned number stars off like something he might have come up with. But once you give the initial settling-down time for the song — like you do for any Rahman number — the peppiness and the dance-beats does take over. The singers, Sid Sriram and Shashaa Tirupati, have little scope for experimentation here...the stock tune is quite staccato-ish.

‘Rajaali’ is on similar lines. It works in the same space that ‘Arima Arima’ and ‘Irumbile’ (from the first instalment, Endhiran) worked; you can easily imagine this being shot with grand visuals. Blaaze and Arjun Chandy try hard on a song that might probably echo well in the theatres when the film releases....but that’s still a few months away, right?

The focus of Rahman’s work in these two released songs for the Shankar-Rajinikanth film clearly seems to be on providing a futuristic soundscape rather than concentrating on tune — perhaps aligning with the sci-fi elements in the script.
