The Book of Isaiah tells how God saved the city of Jerusalem from the siege of the King of Assyria, Sennacherib, although the book does not explain it, it was probably a great plague that decimated the Assyrian army. As a result of his defeat, Sennacherib had to retreat and return to Nineveh where he was murdered by his sons.
After this happened, the Bible relates that King Hezekiah, who bravely defended the city of Jerusalem from the Assyrian empire, fell seriously ill. And so it was that the prophet Isaiah went to see Hezekiah and communicated to him the will of God, the King would soon die. This saddened Hezekiah, because the King of Judah had been a god-fearing man all his life.
With these words, the Book of Isaiah describes how King Hezekiah reacted to Isaiah's words: "Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayer to the LORD, ´Remember, LORD, how I have walked before you faithfully and with wholehearted devotion and have done what is good in your eyes.´ And Hezekiah wept bitterly" Isaiah 38:2-3.
Hezekiah with his actions had emulated his ancestor David, and God had not forgotten this. And so it was that God heard Hezekiah's plea, and through the words of the prophet Isaiah, God informed him that he would add 15 years to his life.
In the Bible all the extraordinary events are usually accompanied by a song or hymn that describes them and glorifies God like the song of Moses; in this way, the song of Hezekiah begins in the Book of Isaiah, by which the King thanked God and recognized his sovereign power:
"I said, ´In the primer of my life
must I go through the gates of death
and be robbed of the rest of my years?´
I said, ´I will not again see the LORD himself
in the land of the living;
no longer will I look on my fellow man,
or be with those who now dwell in this world.
Like a shepherd's tent my house
has been pulled down and taken from me.
Like a weaver I have rolled up my life,
and he has cut me off from the loom;
day and night you made an end of me" Isaiah 38:10-12.
