So, sound wave tattoos, I mean staves and music notes weren’t enough, now as we bask in the dawn of new technology we’ve moved onto tattooing sound waves that you can play back, oh and there’s an app for that.
I’m guessing you record something via the app and then it converts it to a sound wave, you take it to a tattooer and they make a stencil, tattoo it and then you get to play the audio back by scanning the tattoo with the app (on your phone). Let’s face it, it’s a gimmick idea, like who really gives a fuck if you have a tattoo that you can scan on your phone and it says something, big deal, you play it a few times and the thrill is gone.
Props to the guy that came up with it, from an entrepreneurial view anyway, a way to make a buck. For me it smacks of another fad for people to make money off tattoing, similar to the biogenic ink I wrote about a while back. Oh and if you want to join in, you have to join the Skin Motion Tattoo Artist Network at the cost of $1000 for a yearly license, makes me want to throw up at how good these guys are at monetising ideas, slick and corporate.
There’s also the question, how accurate does this sound wave have to be tattooed? pretty spot on I’d imagine. Fine, there’s a lot of skilled tattooers out there who can follow a stencil with a tight 3 or 4 or whatever. Now, what about aging of the skin, the slight thickening of the line after a year or 2 or 3 etc….. I don’t want to be the old bag saying ‘what about when you get old’…. but we’re talking about an interpretation of a graphic (sound wave) by a computer (phone/app) to recreate a specific recorded sound, any slight change to the graphic in terms of thickness or slight blur and it’s possible it might say something completely different.
Good luck with this aging!
My guess is this will be a problem and what they’ll end up doing is change it to some sort of digital signature that can cope with aging of the skin so when you scan your tattoo you’ll be doing nothing more than having an online lookup of your digital signature and playing back your initial recorded message, it won’t actually be reading the sound wave itself, this of course is just where I see this going if it gets any legs.
Bascially meet the barcode of our time, it’s just had its face pulled back, some breast implants and runs on the business model of a franchise.
FML!
