the United States isn't causing the arms race in space

A lot of the world is focused and angry about the American President Trump pushing for a US Space Force on the level with the US Air Force, Army or other branches of the military. It is understandable. An rational person would prefer war be relegated to the past and we venture into the black unknowns of space without taking our petty wars with us. However, whatever I may personally feel about my country's President, the push for a US Space Force may be a case of misplaced anger. The US may have been acting with restraint for war in space rather than militarizing it first.

China has been testing numerous weapons to kill satellites. In 2006, the Chinese fired a laser on an American satellite. In 2007, China fired an antisatellite missile from the ground and smashed into one of their own satellites. This caused a huge cloud of debris and actually inspired the movie of Gravity, even if it was waaaay over the top. China has also made microsatellites that can impact with others nations' satellites and destroy them: in 2011, a Chinese microsat flew dangerously close to the International Space Station. Tests by the Chinese on antisatellite weapons has continued through at least February 2018.

Russia has not been idle either. The Russians actually made the Russian Air Force a branch of the Russian Aerospace Force on August 1, 2015. The Russian Aerospace Force was the first 'space force,' years before the US began creating one. Recently, the Russians launched a matryoshka satellite, that has been acting strangely. The Russians have stated it is for inspecting other nations' satellites. This satellite has been letting out smaller satellites with an unclear purpose. Additionally, in Russia tested antisatellite missiles named Nudol in Nov 2015, May 2016, December 2016 and March 2018. Finally, the Russians claim to have developed a laser for killing satellites as well.

India and Israel have stated they are working on ASAT weapons as well.

The United States is very, very, VERY dependent on satellites for its military. However, its not just its military in the US depends on for satellites. There are many, many others that have been vital for civilian use for a decades now. The Russians and Chinese are directly threatening the very satellites the US depends on. The US military has actually resisted militarizing space. The US Air Force wanted to not pursue asat weapons to avoid an arms race. Unfortunately, those weapons were created anyways and with the USAF and other services being resistant to changing how they handled space. Congress for years has been pushing to make the Pentagon to deal with the problem. The Pentagon resisted. The US Space Force is the result.

I am wildly not a fan of President Trump. However, to claim the US is the driver of a new arms race in space because the US is creating a new branch of the military is very short sighted and American-centric. If you wish to condemn the US, by all means. Just be sure to condemn the actions of the Russians and Chinese who are actually causing this arms race. Much like the recent developments in nuclear weapons. There was already an arms race. The US just woke up.
