SpaceX will make its first ever launch attempt of the Falcon Heavy rocket today - Watch it live here

in space •  7 years ago  (edited)

In a few hours from now, the most powerful rocket currently in operation will attempt its maiden launch from the NASA Kennedy Space Centre in Cape Canaveral!

You can follow the live stream on YouTube in the video below, or on SpaceX's Facebook page here. The current launch time is scheduled for 15:45 ET, and 21:45 GMT+1 central European time (Updated following launch delays due to heavy winds, hopefully, the launch will still happen before the launch-window closes). I will certainly be glued to the screen myself together with some friends and colleagues shortly after work and have been looking forward to this for months!

SpaceX's live stream on YouTub for the Falcon Heavy launch

Yesterday, SpaceX added the following animation video, illustrating the highly anticipated launch. A fun fact is that the payload used for this test launch will be Elon Musk's own Tesla Roadster car!

Musk also did a short interview with a CNN representative at the Cape yesterday. As mentioned by the reporter, all hotels in the area have been sold out and the area surrounding the Cape is expected to be completely packed. In the interview, Elon also highlights what difference the Falcon Heavy can make for the global space sector, both private and public.

I just wanted to share this with you who might be interested in seeing it live. Whether it succeeds or fails, this will be a spectacular view and a significant event for global space activities. At this point, there's little else to do than to wish the SpaceX and NASA KSC team good luck and cross all fingers.

I'll certainly be back with a more detailed post following a potential success or failure.

Ad astra Falcon Heavy!

Thanks for the info. I really did not know about this event, sometimes for one reason or another we forget the incredible things that are happening in the world, but it is always good to enjoy them. again thanks for your post! :))

Thank you @jhosespa for the nice comment :). I agree with you completely, especially when life is busy it can be easy on a day-to-day basis to not remember how many great things we are achieving as a species. I think we all need some time once in a while to remember how far we have come and just appreciate the epic journey we are on together in life :)

Very happy that you found this interesting. A big welcome from me as I see you are new to steemit and I Hope to be seeing you around.

Take care!

This is a great post. WE work about 15 mins from the Space X facility here in Torrance CA / El Segundo but i realize they are launching this in Florida. Can't wait to see this launch though. If you want to check out the Falcon 9 out of orbit fall out we got to see it outside our office here in this post pretty cool

https://steemit.com/dtube/@theuxyeti/ola0xmwj

Thanks for this post, really detailed. and looking forward to this launch.

Glad you liked it! You guys are that close? That's really cool! We were getting together with some people to watch the launch after work, but with the delays, I'll be seeing it from home.

Can't wait!

yea i heard about the weather delays . doh

Very cool! A few fun facts: They played "Space Oddity" by David Bowie as it launched.

Now the rocket will be used for sending satellites and other payloads into orbit.

SpaceX also said in early 2017 that two space tourists put down a deposit to ride on a Falcon Heavy for a trip around the moon.

So cool! Thanks for sharing!

Good catch! And in the back there's a towel with the text "Made on Earth" while in the glove-room, there is a copy of the book Hitchhiker's guide to the Galaxy :D SpaceX surely knows how to make things epic.

SpaceX has already delivered many satellites to orbit, however, now they can take large satellites to geosynchronous orbits and land the boosters at the same time! Or more significantly, take larger payloads to lunar orbit and potentially Mars.

Will be interesting to see if the Moon tourist plan goes along according to plan ;)

Elon Musk is one of my favorite people. His companies all do amazing things in their respective fields. I'm hoping that the Falcon Heavy launch will go nicely as I'm a huge admirer of all things space-related.

A fun fact is that the payload used for this test launch will be Elon Musk's own Tesla Roadster car!

He is so excited for this to be launched... I'd prefer it in my garage though :D

Agree completely! I'm not sure how good the chances are for them making it on the first attempt. Perhaps they will succeed with the launch but then fail to retrieve all three booster engines.

Will be awesome to follow though!

YES! FINALLY! :D
I've been waiting for this!
Science experiment never fails, we always learn something for future exploration or disconfirm the false theory.
Good Luck Falcon!
LLAP!

That is gonna be the fastest car ever!
But seriously, thanks for sharing. will be watching this.

O no, delayed, it seems? Another two hours waiting... well. I hope it'll be up there before I'm too tired to wait for it...

Hahaha, yeah which other car can show they've been travelling at 27 000 km/h? :D

I hope you got to watch it, as it was truly epic! Glad I could help you get the idea to watch it, that's why I wanted to share it with this post :)

Well, the day has finally come! Hopefully everything goes as expected and super explosions won't be the outcome...
Whatever happens, I'm excited to see it go off!

Damn! That was so awesome :D

Fuck yeah! :D

Wow, amazing ~! Possible it would be the first air and expensive transportation that can goes to another planet because SpaceX launched the successfully world's most powerful rocket. I can't wait to hear more of the results of this experiment.

Most of your post go to the moon why this one didn't :( peaple dont know what good post are. i support u

Hey man! Glad to hear you've been following my posts close enough to notice :)
It's because I'm sharing content I would recommend people to see rather than creating my own. Most of my posts take many hours, some time days, to make. Here I just put together 2 videos I watched during lunch-time and a link to the stream I will be watching later. So it does not deserve as much reward really.

What a fantastic historical day this was! Thank you for the post. Here is Elon's final picture of the Tesla after final rocket burn sending it on a very long journey:

Bowie's "Life on Mars" is such a perfect tune..

When i saw the landing of the boosters i was shocked, it was incredible. Something i had never even considered.

You haven't seen the landings of the Falcon 9 before? :O
Yeah, seeing both At the same time with that level of precision was incredible!

@fredrikka, it's wonderful that you too care about its
Interesting post, and very informative and comprehensive in its content.

it's amazing I really like your writing easy to understand

Thanks!

Ooh I didn’t realize there was a launch today. I won’t be able to catch it, but will check it out at home later.

No wonder Elon released those flamethrowers a couple weeks ago, he must be expecting xenomorphs on this voyage 🤪

Mantap sir

Three #SpaceX rockets will launch #FalconHeavy, two will return after it exits the atmosphere and one will deliver the payload, #Musk's own #Tesla red roadster.

A lot has to work right to get the roadster into orbit. It would be incredible if it succeeds (especially if the SpaceX dummy is "driving" the roadster) 😎 🚀 🚗

This guy (Musk) will change the world :)

He already has!
More to come though :)

I've been following what Elon Musk has been doing for a while now. I feel he is going to be a revolutionary leader into the new age. I wish I could invest directly into Space X

I'm glad to see something about this on Steemit, Thank you

Great work. Like your zeal to share vital information. Thank you

space is fleek.

Spacex is planning mission to mars for 2020, right?

cool

This is a nice presentation and the video was also great. Thanks for the information and for sharing @fredrikaa

Gotta conquer those extraterrestrial car markets

But jokes aside though it probably is a heavily modified Tesla specifically constructed to not fall apart, freeze or melt over the course of the journey :D

nice writing

Woow diffrent types of erth

WOooooo Falcon Hefe !

guao q interesting publication will undoubtedly be very pending for the networks of this release

good job, science experiment is really interrestig, I guees the human could discover 10 times more than what we did in the futur, this post is terrific, I support u bro , waiting ur next

I think I'm going to launch next Friday, once I buy my rocket off craigslist!

Interesting info. Easy to read. Upvoted and resteemed to expose others to an area of interest that normally might not be for them. Keep up the good work.

wow
:) amazing

I love it

"We were hoping for a Falcon Light launch, but weight loss attempts have been unsuccessful. We're still not sure what the rocket is eating, but it's probably best to keep your children and small pets indoors at this time."

Seems like this is one step closer to commercial space travel. Kinda crazy, no?

If it succeeds or fails? Do you know how much of tax payers money was invested into it? Buh well I trust my engineering brothers and sisters over at NASA, it will definitely work.

This is a SpaceX rocket, not a NASA rocket. SpaceX is a private company whose money comes from Elon Musk, the investors in SpaceX, and their customers, one of which is NASA.

I pray for its success and hope I am able to watch it.

beautiful god power

good article
this is something amazing

Strange question perhaps, but do you have some estimation how much gold and silver there is in a space rocket? Regards @janusface

Uhm, I don't know of any gold or silver being used in any of the stages. If so, it has to be very little.

I tried looking through a few articles like this one by NASA but found nothing that suggests a significant use of gold or silver.

I think the more common elements Titaniu, Aluminium, Magnesium, Carbon / carbon.fibre, Silicon, Nickel, Chromium and Yttrium. I remember seeing some interviews with Elon where he talked about how he applied his methodology of "thinking through first principles" by literally making a list of all the base elements that a launch vehicles consist of, how much mass of each, and then ask "what's the total cost of all of that", to then realise it wasn't very expensive at all, only the construction and testing was, which is why SpaceX aimed predominantly at using their expertise in IT to make the process more efficient by taking all production underneath one roof and using data better to iterate and innovate quicker and more efficiently.

Thanks:) Very interesting. Elon seems to simplify concept. I have never heard about or met a very intelligent person that does not do the same. Einstein supposedly said "Make things as simple as possible, but not simpler".

i am very interested about it and i am a student of physics in a university...thanks for the info..will wait for u to know more details
