I suspect the main reason is that the other species are so different from us that we would not recognise them, or their signals, even if we did see them.

That could be one major reason to. It maybe that life out there is so bizarre and so different that it doesn't fit any of our understandings about it. We wouldn't even call it life by our standards and yet it would be one nonetheless!
