Using samples of the lunar soil brought back in 2020, from the Chang'e-5 mission, Chinese scientists have managed to create large quantities of water. From these samples, they discovered that lunar minerals contain hydrogen which, when heated to very high temperatures, produces water vapour.
This discovery could revolutionize the construction of lunar bases, making extended stays on the Moon possible
"After three years of extensive research and repeated verification, a completely new method of using the lunar soil to produce large amounts of water has been discovered, which should provide an important design basis for the construction of future lunar scientific research stations and space stations," says CCTV.
One ton of lunar soil = more than 50 liters of water
Thanks to this new method, one tonne of lunar soil will be able to produce between 51 and 76 litres of water. Which, according to the public television channel, would be equivalent to the daily consumption of drinking water by 50 people.
