Neutron star collision unveals wealth of resources in our universe

in space •  7 years ago

When Two ultradense cores of dead stars produced a long-awaited cosmic collision very recently, it provided scientists with a great deal of wealth in the form of ejected material.

Neutron stars, which are formed as aging stars, explode and then leave behind a neutron-rich remnant. What was left after this particular collision, was the churning residue which forged gold, silver, platinum and even other heavy elements such as uranium.

Combining gravitational waves with light from a neutron star merger has been a built up excitement of astrophysicists for a extended period of time.

It's always interesting to find out about collisions and reactions throughout the universe. I think a supernova would still be my favourite thing, second to a black hole and the element of time distortion through dense gravitational pull.

Yes, our universe is very resource-rich. It seems that the first step to exploit those resources will be asteroids. We may even try to extract the helium 3 deposited on the surface of the Moon. But exploiting resources in the debris of an explosion of two neutron stars will have to wait a very long time.

great post. thanks for it.

The most interesting thing I found was a man who died in 1955 theorised the results of this collision of these two bodies and their effect on gravity.

Great post. You can read more about it here
