Esta rata tiene una coloración uniforme en el dorso y a los costados, generalmente negra a café tostado. Las partes inferiores generalmente son más claras. La cola es más larga que la cabeza y el cuerpo y es prácticamente desnuda. Las hembras tienen 12 mamas. Al igual que el resto de los roedores, posee cuatro incisivos, dos superiores y dos inferiores, carece de caninos y premolares anteriores lo que ocasiona que haya un espacio vacío. Sus incisivos crecen durante toda su vida a partir de la base, que va sustituyendo la porción desgastada por la actividad de cortar y roer materiales duros. La parte exterior del diente es más dura y carece de nervio, salvo en la base (Nowak 1991).
