Para realizar transacciones con Bitcoin, ni el remitente ni el receptor están obligados a identificarse o proporcionar cualquier otra información personal.
Sin embargo, muchas transacciones contienen algunas pistas que podrían ayudar a identificar a las partes involucradas. Entre las pistas están las cantidades de Bitcoin, las marcas de tiempo y la dirección IP del remitente. Además, las monedas utilizadas en una transacción podrían estar "contaminadas" o asociadas a las direcciones Bitcoin conocidas de un usuario.
Para identificar a los usuarios, estas pistas se combinarían con información adicional sobre los mismos que podrían obtenerse de proveedores de servicios de Internet (ISP), intercambios de Bitcoin, carteras web, spyware en los dispositivos de los usuarios (Bitcoiners) y los propios Bitcoiners.
Los bitcoiners pueden permanecer completamente anónimos durante sus transacciones utilizando algunas buenas prácticas de privacidad de Bitcoin. Estas estrategias evitarán que otros individuos o grupos obtengan información adicional que pueda revelar su identidad.
Una de las estrategias mas recomendadas es utilizar servicios de Bitcoin que aseguren que los usuarios permanecerán anónimos durante y después de las transacciones, utilizando una red privada virtual (gratuita o pagada) y utilizando una nueva dirección para cada transacción.
Otros consejos incluyen establecer una sólida configuración de seguridad y privacidad en los dispositivos y aplicaciones que se utilizan, utilizar un sistema operativo con buenas características de privacidad como Linux y mantener actualizado el antivirus para prevenir eficazmente el spyware para evitar que el malware cambie las carpetas de destino.
El anonimato no significa que una persona pueda librarse de crímenes mayores. De hecho, varios crímenes relacionados con Bitcoin han llevado a los perpetradores a ser castigados.
Uno de los casos mas renombrados, son los ataques perpetrados por WannaCry, donde hace tres meses lograron vulnerar la seguridad de varias empresas exigiendo recompensas en bitcoin por recuperar sus archivos y alcanzaron a recaudar cerca de $140.000 dólares.
Pero uno de los inconvenientes mas grandes que tuvieron, lo enfrentaron a la hora de convertir esos bitcoin a dinero físico, para lo cual debían hacer uso de un exchange (casa de intercambio), lo cual presentó un problema, ya que un exchange es una empresa que esta sometida a muchas regulaciones.
De todo esto se sabe que los creadores de WannaCry utilizaron Shapeshift.io un exchange en el cual ni siquiera es necesario registrarse, donde pretendían cambiar los bitcoin por monero, una criptomoneda con mejores características de anonimato. Pero no se sabe si fueron las autoridades o la propia exchange que se dio cuenta de las múltiples transacciones que se estaban realizando y terminaron por bloquear los fondos.
>Si bien Bitcoin puede permitir formas rápidas y descentralizadas de mover fondos, no necesariamente brinda cobertura suficiente para llevar a cabo actividades ilegales.
