Una de las obras pictóricas más complejas de toda la historia del arte.
Construida por orden del papa Sixto IV —de ahí su nombre—, entre los años 1473 y 1481 en el Vaticano, realizado por el artista Giovannino de´ Dolci.
En 1483, el Papa Julio II, nieto de Sixto IV, no satisfecho por el cielo estrellado que decoraba la bóveda, llama el joven Miguel Ángel. El tema escogido, con interpretación neoplatónica, es la historia del mundo y de la humanidad antes de la venida de Cristo.
Famosa en todo el mundo por ser la sede oficial del Cónclave, o sea, la sala en la cual los cardinales se reunen para elegir al nuevo Papa.
Treinta años después, el Papa Clemente VII llamó de nuevo a Miguel Ángel, esta vez para encargarle la realización del Juicio Final, un mural realizado al fresco para decorar el ábside de la Capilla Sixtina.
