Luego que Pedro Alejando González se marchó al cafetal, poco después, llamó desde el patio un hombre cerrado de Liqui-Liqui preguntando por Juana Guevara. Ésta se encontraba en el fogón preparando el desayuno de los niños; y Mercedes, la mayorcita, salió al patio a preguntar que se le ofrecía al que llamaba. La niña, entró de regreso al rancho y en el fogón le dijo a su mama que el señor que estaba afuera decía llamarse Paulino Freites y no venía por comida sino por una vela. Esta fue, la única vez que Mercedes vio a su papá.
