Alrededor de 12 etnias indígenas habitan la zona. Entre ellas existe una fabulosa diversidad en su lengua, sus costumbres y adaptación a los procesos de aculturación. Las poblaciones indígenas más al sur del Estado (Alto Orinoco), como los famosos Yanomami, es la más llamativa y exótica de todas, pues aún conserva muy vivas sus ancestrales costumbres, tan distintas a las del mundo “civilizado”.
