El Lago de Maracaibo se formó hace 35 millones de años, a través de los procesos de levantamiento y erosión que fueron especialmente severos y son perfectamente conocidos, especialmente en las regiones centrales de la Cuenca del Lago de Maracaibo en cuyo subsuelo se desconocen sedimentos del Eoceno superior, comprobándose por el contrario, que la erosión avanzó considerablemente hasta remover la sedimentación del Ciclo inferior en forma parcial o total y alcanzar en algunos lugares la parte superior del Cretácico. Hoy en día constituye el pilar de la economía del estado por ubicarse en él la zona de mayor desarrollo petrolífero del país, como es la Cuenca Petrolífera del Lago de Maracaibo. Se le define como una gran bahia semicerrada, lamentablemente en estos tiempos presenta estado de deterioro y contaminación pero sigue siendo una maravilla natural de mi pais...
