Today we continue with the post analysis of the films of everyone's favorite animation studio, the Ghibli studio, it's the turn of the movie "From Up To Poppy Hill" I hope you like it and we started.
This is undoubtedly a film to be enjoyed calmly and in complete relaxation. The movie itself is very slow; inclusive, during the first half hour something remarkable happens. It has a very intimate and close to reality, because the important thing in it are the feelings and thinking of the protagonists. Secondaries do not add much to the story. Even the flags that Umi raises every day become of greater importance than them.
I have the feeling that Ghibli has standardized his drawing, especially in the design of human characters, where they are usually of simple design and some very similar to each other. But, if we talk about the landscapes and scenarios in which our characters are, they are full of very careful details, made with a thoroughness that makes the movie enjoy watching it. The landscapes of the town near the coast in which the young protagonists live are differentiated with the atmosphere full of chaos of a Tokyo that is about to host the Olympic Games (1964).
The story is about a subject that seems to like to the japanese a lot, since it can be seen in different types of Japanese entertainment. So, in itself, the originality of the film is somewhat scarce, although the important thing is not that, but the way in which the story is told, and in that area, Ghibli is known for doing it in a very special way.
After the result of his previous film, "Tales of Earthsea", Gorō Miyazaki was facing a challenge with "From Up To Poppy Hill". One that went pretty well and with good answers, because this film is one of those little jewel films that remain behind the shadow of other productions that had a team behind them that was formed by names of great regret in the industry.
The soundtrack is quite good, despite not having any melody that sticks in our minds, of those melodies in which we are surprised humming. In short, we are facing a minor daughter of Ghibli, but that does not mean it is a bad production, film, film, etc. On the contrary, it is a good bet and you have to see it without forgetting that it is a fairly calm film, that everything flows slowly within it and that the conclusion leaves a good taste in your mouth.
