Comparatives in Spanish L18

in spanish •  8 years ago

We use comparatives to.... you guessed it.... to compare things! We do this in Spanish too.
WITH ADJECTIVES
We use the phrase "más ...... que" to mean "more _____ than". An adjective goes in the blank.
example: Mi pelo es más largo que el tuyo. = My hair is longer than yours. *Notice there isn't a word for longer in Spanish so we have to basically say "more long than".

We use "menos _____ than" to say "less ______ than".
example: María es menos amable que Mónica. = María is less nice than Monica. We would usually say "Monica is nicer than Maria" to avoid the negative here, but grammatically it's ok.

We use "tan _____ como" to say "as _____ as".
example: Mi hermano es tan loco como tú. =My brother is as crazy as you.

WITHOUT ADJECTIVES
When we compare things without using adjectives we use the following:

más que = more than
example: Me gusta ir al parque más que al gimnasio = I like to go to the park more than going to the gym.

menos que = less than
example = Te gustan los tacos menos que las hamburguesas = You like tacos less than hamburgers.

tanto como = as much as
example: ¿Te gusta comer frutas tanto como verduras? = Do you like to eat fruit as much as vegetables?

I hope this helps you!
