I've been trying to get a couple of my artist friends onto Steemit lately (mostly for the steemfollowers refs lol) and it always seems to go the same way: they're obviously down with the concept of getting paid and recognized for what was just a hobby before, but it doesn't take long for them to lose interest. Last chick said it felt like a cult because all the comments (both spam and genuine) were so positive. I realized she was kinda right, a negative comment would at best be non-profitable and at worst drive your rep into the dirt. She also said that on her own page/posts that she felt 'lonely' (on a supposed social media platform lol) which was weird cause I often feel the exact same way.

So what I'm trying to say is 1:0 risk:reward ratio on negative comments prevents people from having genuine discussions and the format makes new people feel ignored and dejected on a social media platform.

I don't know if chainbb is the answer but it's definitley the closest right now imo

Each individual have their own perception and thinking and your friends may just not be interested to move out of other social media.
Honestly speaking, if I read your post once, I will not understand it fully. May be if I read those again, I may get additional points and understanding. But, as I see, most of your posts have some ancient historical people's photos and information around them. May be one day, I will be able to understand those fully.

I'm assuming english isn't your first language? If you have trouble understanding some of my stuff that's most likely on me, not you. I tend to over do it with the word-play, playing with those idiosyncrasies unique to a native speaker. Some of it is also just kinda obstinatley difficult casuse I'm a dick I guess? lol

2 weeks into it, I admit I'm still struggling to find my footing and audience. Good to have the outlet of chainbb to explore other avenues and hear from others.

yep, it does feel this way sometimes... especially if a post is not getting the attention it deserves... its also hard to keep up with people because I actively have to check what they are up to, unless I accidentally happen to spot them with a recognizable [William Blake] thumbnail ... its a two-way game though... you got to interact with people, not wait for them... and being genuine doesn't require people to be mean (that does happen here and there)... my problem is that i don't have time to both stay super engaged with people and also make a while-worthy content on a constant basis.

The "actively having to check what their up to" is definitely a big issue for the platform, or at least it is for me. I can barely manage to text back within 24hrs consistently, let alone check everyone I likes page manually to see if they possibly did something worth talking about. Also having all the big channels on Discord, I can honestly say that thing can almost gives me a heart attack sometimes lol. Can't believe the amount of networking people here do.

Just wanna add I'm not trying to shit on Steem.it or Steem or anything really, I think it could be a truly industry disruptive technology (in all the good ways) and I enjoy my time here, just pointing out areas I think might be an issue re:mainstream adoption.

Depends on what you mean by negative? Is a comment where you criticize or disagree negative? If so, i have written many negative comments and have received negative comments. If others agree with said "negative comment" they could upvote the comment. I have earned SBD by others agreeing and voting on what you call negative.

Sorry, I should have clarified - negative was the wrong term. For example: someone posts an article on personality disorders. Someone else want to respond with a civil criticism of the DSM. I'm saying, even though it might not be true, the comment section is so sunshine and rainbows, they feel their criticism would be unwelcome, and maybe even cost them some rep. And I think in some communities that's true.

Outright malicious asshole behaviour should obviously be disciplined to some extent.

Haha yeah I'm being pretty hypocritical with this post, I'm entirely guilty of what I wrote above. But like if its say a fiction piece and everyone was commentin' havin fun' talkin' bout their favourite characters (impressively while simultaneously rolling around in ecstasy) and shit even the most minor constructive criticism would have the tonal equivalent of taking a shit in front of the line of registers at Walmart.

Kinda reminds me of working as a server/bartender for tips. At first you get the crappy section and short shifts. After a while it can be fun but definitely hard to truly speak your mind.
