This above article recently made the rounds in social media; a young woman developed an IQ of 220 after drinking sperm every day for a year! Yuck! Who would even do that? But on researching a bit, I found that the sperm did have a few benefits… Read this with an open mind 😉
So, in conjunction with World Food Day, I thought what if we were to consider eating/drinking a very unconventional meal: the sperm. Does it help in any way? Ah, bet you are curious to know more about this! While the original article that went viral has been proven fake, here are some benefits that I "discovered". Here goes…
Nutritional Content – What does it contain?
Varying depending on age, weight, and lifestyle habits like diet and exercise, a normal male ejaculate contains between 5 and 25 calories and a minimal amount of protein as well.
Every ejaculate is about one teaspoon’s worth and of it, only 1% is sperm. What makes the 99% is over 200 different types of proteins as well as vitamins and minerals. The other components include: Vitamin C, calcium, chlorine, citric acid, fructose, lactic acid, magnesium, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, vitamin B12 and zinc.
Here are some “benefits” of consuming the sperm.
- Ingestion of sperm helps pregnant mothers
- A research done by the Dutch showed that swallowing semen was associated with a lower risk of preeclampsia as it keeps the blood pressure at a lower level.
- Gordon Gallup hypothesized that in order to allow the body to build up a tolerance, expectant women who have morning sickness could ingest the sperm of the baby’s father to relieve it!
- Ingestion of sperm helps beat depression
- 293 female college students at the State University of New York were in a study which suggested that semen acts as an antidepressant. The researcher suggested that, "These data are consistent with the possibility that semen may antagonize depressive symptoms.” Semen contains mood-elevating estrone and oxytocin, cortisol, melatonin, anti-depressant prolactin, thyrotropin releasing hormone and serotonin.

- Ingestion of sperm helps ovulation
- Sex is not just good, it is GOOD for you! It is found that a protein in semen acts on the female brain to induce ovulation. This is the same protein that controls the growth, maintenance, and survival of neurons. This finding, by the researches from University of Saskatchewan further suggests that semen may work as a signalling hormone which acts via the hypothalamus and pituitary gland of the female brain – triggering the release of other hormones prompting ovulation!

Caution is necessary
But BEWARE! Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as HIV, Hepatitis B and C, Herpes, Chlamydia and many more such infections CAN be transmitted through semen. And please also bear in mind, all the nutrients mentioned above can be gotten from a simple multivitamin. So, to swallow or not to swallow? I leaves it up to you to decide!
