So it was a normal Saturday morning, and i found myself opening my eyes at 11:45am and staring up at the roof, about to leap out of bed and into the day! at ... my computer ... aprox 2 footsteps from my bed...
But what should i see above me? Nestled high above my head at the ceiling, but a huntsman spider.
For those of you who are not Australian, these spiders look, like they would be extremely dangerous, however, in reality, they are fairly friendly, don't attack people, to my knowledge have no venom? (dont quote me on that) and really only care about eating insects, however, they look scary.
They are usually fairly big, on occasion, there are some .. special ones or rare ones i guess you could say, that for whatever reason (please consult arachnid scientist) seem to get like, doubly large ... to anyone who lives in mountain regions of Australia, you probably know what i am talking about.
So this visitor to my humble abode was, huge, and i mean, fucking huge, i mean ... to illustrate, if you take an iphone, put your hand in the middle of it, and stretch your fingers out, thats about the size give or take we are talking.
So, i did what i always do, when giant spiders decide to come and visit me, i looked up, and promptly said "good morning" got up and went about my day.
From Atlas, to Drinking, ranting with friends, i set bout my usual Saturday activities, and chatted with this spider, as i generally always talk to animals and creatures... gotta like ... commune with nature mannnnnn. :P
This giant, terrifying spider continues to scuttle around my roof all day, and into the late hours of the night, and early morning.
Usually, i will help them get back outside, as they are often just lost, but on this occasion, i had left the window open for it, and i figured it would be smart enough to leave when it wanted to, like it obviously came in for a reason right? maybe it was hot? perhaps there was a bird trying to eat it? some sort of dispute between it and another spider, who knows, but it was not bothering me.
True fun fact, i always used to be deathly afraid of spiders, until probably about my mid 20's where i spent a lot of time researching Arachnids, at that point, realizing that while poisonous, there are very few, that want to outright attack humans, and even most instances of Human & Spider hostilities are generally because either the human accidentally steps on the spider, or the spider accidentally ends up somewhere a human is.
Not to say i am entirely ultra comfortable with them to the extent i would be happy to have them on me, but i am certainly happy to have them around me, because the reality is, you are probably, at most parts of the day, encountering or pretty close to spiders and you don't even realize it... just usually not giant, wtf how did you get this large spiders.
The strangest thing happened at around 2:00am Sunday Morning, and i dont know if it was made significantly more cooler than it actually was because i had been drinking, but after basically sailing for hours in Atlas (long story) i light a cigarette, lean back in my chair, and look up at the spider, and in a very drunk, yet jovial and gentlemanly tone audibly explain.
"Spider, it has been a pleasure having you as a guest, but! i must now go to sleep, and i would appreciate it, if you did not decide to invade my sheets, crawl on my head, and or, attempt to eat me" i take a drag of my cigarette, and exhale, still looking at this spider, about .. 40 seconds or so have passed and then it like just .. sprints, from one side of the roof, around the corners, all the way around the bedroom, to the window and leaves the room....
And im like.... "did that just happen"
Scientifically, it probably was just pissed off by the toxins in the smoke, however, its a much cooler story to think it decided to leave.
And so thats my story, ok ok, its a slow Crypto news weekend people, what do you want from me here, its supposed to be a human interest story? geez :P
Pro Tip 4 Life: If you ever need to move a spider, but dont want to get close to it, remember you can use light, larger spiders, do not like bright lights shined on them, i do mean very bright torches, and often, you can guide them in the direction you want them to go, only thing to consider is, you are seriously annoying it, and its much more friendly to just move them with a plate or something.
