Christian studies on faith: "I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you", Ezekiel 36:26

Ezekiel is one of the major prophets along with Isaias, Daniel and Jeremiah, his work is very important and many of the themes of his prophetic book are taken up in the new testament. Although the book is difficult to interpret and many parts of the book are very dark, in the Christian faith it is considered that many prophecies of this major prophet refer to Jesus and the holy spirit.
There are a series of oracles and prophecies in the book of Ezekiel about the hope and salvation of the chosen people in the last part of his book, sin and iniquity will eventually give rise to the knowledge of God through a new birth: "I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.", Ezekiel 36:25-27.

This part of the book of Ezekiel bears a great resemblance to the dialogue between Jesus and Nicodemus about the birth of the water and the spirit:
“Jesus replied: ´Very truly I tell you, no one can see the Kingdom of God unless they are born again´.
´How can someone be born when they are old?´ Nicodemus asked.
´Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!´
Jesus answered: ´Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying: ´You must be born again´.", John 3:3-7.
In essence, Ezequiel is talking to us about eschatological hope or providential hope, dark times must give way to bright times through a regeneration of the human being. God will not allow sin in humanity indefinitely and this will happen when the Kingdom of God is re-established in a definitive way among men. This is why the book of Ezekiel advances us themes that will later be taken up by the book of Revelation.
