Psalm 31 is a psalm with a deep meaning for the Christian faith, most likely a part of this psalm was quoted by Lord Jesus at the moment of his death in the cross, when Jesus entrusted his spirit to God (Luke 23:46).
Psalm 31, a song probably written by King David, is a Psalm to take especially into account in times of despair, anguish, and suffering, as in the case of Jesus on the cross. Many times God seems to forget about man and the affairs of the world, but God has a plan, a merciful love (Agape), and the Lord is faithful to those who fear him from the heart. That is why the sensible man, that is, the man with common sense, like Christ on the cross, must always keep this psalm in mind, because God is a refuge and a saving rock.
The trust in God is a spiritual gift that must be lived every day to receive the greatest blessings from God, that is why the Psalm begins with these words:
"In you, LORD, I have taken refuge;
let me never be put to shame;
deliver me in your righteousness.
Turn your ear to me,
come quickly to my rescue;
be my rock of refuge,
a strong fortress to save me.
Since you are my rock and my fortress,
for the sake of your name lead and guide me.
Keep me free from the trap that is set for me,
for you are my refuge.
Into your hands I commit my spirit;
deliver me, LORD, my faithful God." Psalm 31:1-5.
The Psalm continues and describes the problem of oppression and persecution in society. Sinners lie in wait and lay traps for the upright man, just as the wolf has nothing in common with the lamb, neither does the sinner with the upright man.
That is why the Psalm expresses:
"Because of all my enemies,
I am the utter contempt of my neighbors
and an object of dread to my closest friends—
those who see me on the street flee from me.
I am forgotten as though I were dead;
I have become like broken pottery.
For I hear many whispering,
´Terror on every side!´
They conspire against me
and plot to take my life" Psalm 31:11-13.
The Psalm ends by recognizing the importance of hope for men:
"Be strong and take heart,
all you who hope in the LORD" Psalm 31:24.
