The outpouring of the Spirit: I wish that all the LORD's people were prophets and that the LORD would put his Spirit on them!. Numbers 11:29

The Book of Numbers tells a story that is an antecedent to the prophecies of Joel and the Christian Pentecost. The Book of Numbers tells of an outpouring of the spirit among the elders of Israel as they marched toward the holy land led by Moses.
The Book of Numbers begins with the departure from Sinai, where Israel had its encounter with God. Although the Israelites had received the holy law, the effort had been long, and many looked back, towards the comforts that some still remembered from the land of Egypt, and the final goal seemed somewhat unattainable, the taking of possession of the holy land, Canaan.
That is why the book of Numbers tells that God allowed many to share the spirit of Moses, to strengthen the people in the mission. And so God told Moses to gather the elders and scribes in the Tent of Meeting so that they would receive the spirit: "I will come down and speak with you there, and I will take some of the power of the Spirit that is on you and put it on them. They will share the burden of the people with you so that you will not have to carry it alone" Numbers 11:17.
But it happened that some elders could not gather in the Tent of Meeting but they still received the spirit and prophesied. And a young man told the fact to Moses and asked him not to allow that, whereupon Moses answered with wise words: "Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all the LORD's people were prophets and that the LORD would put his Spirit on them!" Numbers 11:29.
Like the prophet Joel who prophesied the miracle of Pentecost (Joel 2:28-32), Moses taught the importance and necessity of prophecy for the spiritual guidance of the people. Because as a proverb saying says and teaches: "Where there is no prophetic vision the people cast off restraint" Proverbs 29:18.
