Spiritual rebirth: For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Ephesians 5:8

Darkness in spiritual terms represents a state of deprivation, when we practice error, that is, sin, concealment strategies are developed, everything is done behind the back of the other, of the neighbor. Sin is not beautiful or kind, that's why sin is darkness, sin is hidden. The apostle James explains: "If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn't do it, it is sin for them", James 4:17.
This is why Jesus calls us to a change in lifestyle, to move from a life full of sins to a life of righteousness (“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”, Matthew 7:12), this is the true spiritual Passover, the spiritual rebirth: the passage from the death instinct to the life instinct.
Jesus reveals his mission in the gospels: "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.", Luke 5:27-32.
The apostle Paul reminds us in his epistle to the Ephesians, of the deep need for this change: "For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. But everything exposed by the light becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light.", Ephesians 5:8-13.

When we are internally light, we expand our state of inner well-being to others, that is why there is a term: "radiant happiness". Mercy is expansive, progressive; mercy is way, truth and life (John 14:6).
The call to conversion is the call to the true life of man: "Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you", Ephesians 5:14. God's love is an interior call towards the perfection of life, which transforms us, guides us; Charity is a final cause reason, that is why Jesus speaks to us in a metaphorical way of the "commandment of love".
